The #RiseUpTour officially kicked off with an unforgettable first day in Auckland, New Zealand! After a long and exhausting journey across the globe—spanning four flights, 17 time zones, and over 8,000 miles—the Voices of Unity Youth Choir finally arrived at their destination. Though the journey itself was an adventure, Day 1 was only just beginning.
With little time to rest, the choir dove straight into one of the most exhilarating events of the World Choir Games: the Parade of Nations. This incredible celebration set the stage for the days ahead, giving our students their first taste of the camaraderie, culture, and connection that define this global event.
A Warm Welcome to Auckland
The excitement began as soon as we touched down. Despite the long hours of travel, the energy among the students and staff was palpable. Arriving in Auckland—a vibrant city surrounded by lush landscapes and bustling with life—felt like stepping into another world.
After settling into our hotel and unpacking, it was time to gear up for the Parade of Nations. The anticipation was electric as the choir prepared their flags and uniforms, ready to represent Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the United States on the global stage.
The Parade of Nations: A Global Celebration
The Parade of Nations is a signature event of the World Choir Games, bringing together choirs from every corner of the globe in a joyous celebration of unity through music. Each participating country marched in the parade, proudly displaying their flags and cultural pride, cheered on by locals from Auckland and fellow choirs from around the world.
The Voices of Unity Youth Choir stood tall as they waved the American flag, representing not only their hometown of Fort Wayne but also the spirit of unity and excellence that defines their journey. Walking alongside choirs from Africa, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and beyond was a powerful reminder of the universal language of music and the shared humanity that connects us all.
Along the route, our students engaged with other choirs, exchanging stickers, small gifts, and warm smiles. It was a beautiful moment of cultural exchange, as young people from diverse backgrounds came together, united by their shared passion for music.
A Memorable Performance
The Parade of Nations concluded with a breathtaking traditional New Zealand dance performance. This vibrant display of Māori culture included the haka—a powerful ceremonial dance—and other traditional elements that captivated the audience. The Voices of Unity students were mesmerized, soaking in the energy and authenticity of the performance.
For many choir members, this was their first encounter with the rich cultural heritage of New Zealand, and it left a lasting impression. It was a fitting close to a day that felt like the opening ceremony of the Olympics, with its grand scale and celebration of diversity.
Preparing for the Next Challenge
Even after such an exciting day, the work was far from over. The choir headed straight into rehearsals to prepare for the next day’s Gospel Competition. Despite their fatigue, the students remained focused and dedicated, knowing that their hard work and preparation would soon pay off.
